Natural Stone Countertops

A Stone Unlike Any Other.

Non-porous without sealing. Heat resistant enough for a hot pan. And unlike every other countertop material, it gets more beautiful the longer you own it.

About This Material

The Stone That Has Been Used for Thousands of Years

Soapstone is one of the oldest building materials in human history.   Used for centuries in European kitchens, Scandinavian fireplaces, and American farmhouses for its unmatched practicality and quiet beauty.

Rich in talc, soapstone is naturally non-porous,  meaning it resists staining without any sealing whatsoever. It withstands direct heat from pots and pans without damage. And it develops a deep, rich patina over time that makes it more visually compelling the longer it lives in your home.

If you’ve only seen soapstone in photos, you haven’t fully understood it yet. Come into our Findlay showroom and run your hands across it. There is no other stone that feels like this.

01

Naturally Non-Porous

No sealing required.  Now, at installation, or ever. Soapstone’s dense talc composition prevents liquids from penetrating the surface. Spills wipe clean. Bacteria don’t find a foothold. It simply does not stain the way other stones can.

02

Exceptional Heat Resistance

Set a hot pan directly on soapstone without worry. It is one of the most heat-resistant countertop materials available. Far more tolerant than quartz, and even more forgiving than most granites. Used in fireplaces and wood stoves for this very reason.

03

A Patina That Grows With You

Soapstone ages the way fine leather does,  beautifully. Scratches absorb into the surface and disappear with a light sanding or a coat of mineral oil. In some European cultures, a worn stone countertop is a mark of a home well lived in.

What Soapstone Does Over Time

A Surface That Gets Better With Age

Most countertop materials show wear as damage — scratches, chips, dulled edges. Soapstone is different. It develops a living patina, deepening in color and character the longer it’s used.

Light scratches can be sanded out in minutes. A fresh coat of mineral oil restores depth and richness to the surface and helps even out the natural darkening process. Many homeowners come to love this quality — their countertop tells a story rather than hiding one.

If you prefer a more uniform look, applying mineral oil from the start accelerates the darkening consistently. If you want it to develop on its own, leave it. Either way, the result is a stone that feels lived in and considered — not sterile.

Where Soapstone Excels

A Stone Built for Real Kitchen Life

Soapstone’s combination of traits makes it ideal for spaces that see genuine daily use,  not just kitchens that are designed to be admired.

Kitchen countertops and islands — handles heat, resists stains, and develops character with use. Built for the way real kitchens operate.

Baking areas — naturally cool surface temperature makes soapstone ideal for pastry work. Dough doesn’t stick and cleanup is simple.

Bathroom vanities — non-porous and bacteria resistant, soapstone is an exceptional choice for bath surfaces where hygiene matters.

Fireplace surrounds — soapstone has been used in fireplaces for centuries. It absorbs and radiates heat efficiently, and it handles thermal cycling without damage.

Outdoor kitchens — soapstone’s density and natural resistance make it a durable option for covered outdoor cooking spaces.

Care & Maintenance

The Easiest Stone to Live With

Soapstone’s maintenance requirements are minimal by nature. No sealing at any point. No special stone cleaners required. The most involved step is optional mineral oil application — and even that is simple.

  • Wipe spills with a damp cloth, soapstone does not absorb liquids
  • Clean daily with mild soap and water,  no special products needed
  • Apply mineral oil periodically to deepen color and even out the patina
  • Sand out scratches lightly with fine-grit sandpaper, they disappear completely
  • Hot pots and pans can be placed directly on the surface without concern
  • No sealing required, ever

Soapstone Countertop Questions

Soapstone is softer than granite or quartzite, so it can develop surface scratches — especially in a busy kitchen. The key difference is that scratches can be sanded out completely with fine-grit sandpaper, and a coat of mineral oil makes them invisible in the meantime. Many homeowners consider this a feature, not a flaw — the surface develops character rather than damage.

Never. Soapstone is naturally non-porous — liquids cannot penetrate it. This is one of its greatest advantages over granite, marble, and quartzite. No sealing at installation, no annual re-sealing, no maintenance products required.

Yes. Soapstone is among the most heat-resistant countertop materials available and has been used on fireplaces and wood stoves for centuries. Hot pots and pans can be placed directly on the surface without damage — this is one of the areas where soapstone significantly outperforms quartz and most engineered surfaces.

Mineral oil is optional — used purely for appearance. Applying it darkens soapstone’s color, brings out depth, and helps the patina develop evenly across the surface. It doesn’t protect the stone from staining because soapstone doesn’t stain. If you prefer to let the patina develop naturally and unevenly, you don’t need to apply oil at all.

The same way we handle all our natural stone — fully in-house. After your cabinets are permanently installed, we come to your home for precise digital templating. We fabricate your countertops in our Findlay shop, including edge profiles and any sink or faucet cutouts, then our own crew delivers and installs. You approve the layout before we cut a single piece.
